40 Ways To Practice Self-Care

Being kind to yourself isn’t a luxury… it’s a necessity.

It also isn’t an act of selfishness. Practicing self-care means that you’re willing to accept yourself and acknowledge the fact that you have both strengths and weaknesses. When you take care good care of yourself, you also set the standards for how you want to be treated by others.

I have two small kids and I sometimes have to lock myself in my bedroom with wine, snacks and my DVR.  I just need time away from my kids and the hubby.  You can’t pour from an empty cup, unless I refill mine. And don’t mean wine. 🙂

Do you agree?

It’s not always easy, especially if you love staying busy, working and taking care of others. You might even feel a little guilty about taking some time out for yourself. BUT, we all need to show ourselves a little extra love at times. Better yet, make it a habit. Whether it be turning off your phone for a few hours or giving yourself a little day off once one a while.

Shout out to ThirteenThoughts for many of the ideas on this list.

1. Watch your favorite movie. For the 20th time.

I’ve started writing down things that made me happy that day and taking more time and care for little things which normally i might not see as important aspects in my life.

Good stuff! Not only is self-care necessary (not just a luxury), but it’s a radically feminist act. I wrote about how self-care can be a form of resistance here, in case you’re interested in checking it out:

I agree, self-care is sometimes not as important as it should be for allot of people, we need to take time and take care of us. Love your list of ideas, I will definitely be putting some of those in my schedule this week. I could use some re-charge time and me time.

It is soooo important to take care of yourself as a mom. If you don’t take care of you how are YOU supposed to take care of others?! I love to relax and eat some sherbert ice cream!!

We hang a lot of important things on our refrigerator, and this needs to be printed off and hung there! A lot of great tips. I already do a few of them……a few more wouldn’t hurt 🙂

I have been wanting to get a massage for quite some time now! Not only do my muscles really need it, but I just love it for the relaxation aspect. And yes, yes, yes to watching your fave movie. I do this all the time!

Amazing tips. Self-care doesn’t need to be time-consuming, or expensive. My best friend is a massage therapist, and I got one of the best massages for my birthday and it was just amazing. I love watching movies too! Great list.

What a great post! I so need to really take some time to really practice self-care, I forget about myself a lot. Going to start doing some things just for me!

  • Reply Jenn June 2, 2017 at 9:50 am

So much yes to all of this. Making time for self is something I need to work harder at. I always plan to do these things with my day off, but somehow end up doing for others or catching up on house work. Now that our youngest has graduated high school, I’m really hoping this changes.

YES YES YES! I am going to use this list. I need to get better and really focusing on my self care and not just those in my family. I hope now that i am going to just be working one job I can really focus on this! Thanks for the inspiration!

I wrote a very similar Blog post a while ago…and I agree with everything single thing on this list. Self care is SO SO important, but many women forgo it to take care of others first!

Jenell these are all such great way to have a bit of time just for yourself! I definitely make it a habit to get up about an hour before everyone else and simply – breath. I admit most times it is with my laptop but I think I’ll try to have a few days of simple silence. Thanks so much for the great tips!!

After the week I had, this is the most important post I’ve seen in awhile. I’ve learned the hard way, what happens when you don’t practice self care, your life will crumble. I have to remind myself every week to practice basic simple self care things.
