How To Make The Best Out Of A Mommy Sick Day

January 31, 2018

Thank you Puffs for sponsoring this post!

When I’m not feeling my best, my nose won’t stop leaking, and everything hurts all I want to do is stay in bed. But as my alarm is going off I remember I can’t possibly lay in bed because I’ve got to get the kids dressed, fed, cleaned and on the bus in an hour!

I really need a sick day…
Sick Day? Mom’s don’t get sick days!

I don’t know about you but my kids do not care if I am sick. Because they are kids. It is their job to ignore everything but themselves as they learn who they are in this world. Yes, it is important to teach compassion, but we can only expect so much out of little ones. When you’re a mom you’ve got to take care of everyone else, but most importantly, you’ve got to take care of YOU.

I’ve put together all the things I like to have on hand when I’m having a sick day. These items help me feel better during my sick day and help to keep me functioning at my best when I feel like a mess. Please find comfort in my personalized “Get Well” package and pass it on to another mom in need during this cold and flu season.

Stock Up On Puffs!

Nothing hurts more then a sore irritated nose. As much as it hurts I’m surprised by the amount of people who don’t have tissues stocked up. 1 in 5 people do not have tissues on them during cold & flu season, and have to look for or buy them when a cold strikes*.  When I’m sick I use America’s #1 selling Lotion Tissue brand – Puffs Plus Lotion! It’s just the best. No matter how many times a minute I have to wipe or blow my leaky nose, when I use Puffs my nose always feels soothed unlike when I use rough tissues. And don’t get me started on how gross those other thin tissues leave my hands. YUCK! Two-thirds of people get sick at least once during peak cold and flu season* be sure to keep your family’s noses soothed with Puffs facial tissues, because a nose in need deserves Puffs indeed!

Daytime Treatment

Even on the worst of sick days you may be able to call out sick from work – but how can you call out on your kids. The “mommy! mommy! mommy!” doesn’t stop just because your sick. In fact it sounds louder when your head is already throbbing. To get through the day I use DayQuil. DayQuil helps me function at my best given my illness. I particularly appreciate how well it works to alleviate my aches and pains. We keep our home and travel bags stocked with DayQuil because I don’t want to get caught out there feeling the brunt of my symptoms.

Throat Treatment

Drinking a cup of hot tea really helps with soothing my aching sore throat when I’m sick and coughing up a lung. Drinking hot tea makes my insides feel really good too and the antioxidants found in green tea help to detoxify your body and boost your immune system. If you’re not really into tea then hot soup or popsicles are other great alternatives you may already have in your pantry or freezer to sooth your throat.

Nap If You Need To… Please.

Unfortunately, enjoying a quiet, restful day in bed is not an option for most moms. So what’s a mom to do? To be honest I don’t nap often, but when I’m sick I feel so exhausted as my body is fighting off the illness that it’s just best to rest. The issue for me is the daylight. It’s really hard for me to sleep when it’s bright out so I have to use a sleeping mask. Have you ever used one of these? This thing is heaven sent!  Blocks out all the light so I can get a little bit of a rest in. Now only if it could block out the sounds.

Calm Your Energy

I burn scented candles in my home quite often because I find them to be very soothing. The gentle, mesmerizing quality of their light makes them a perfect aid for any relaxation routine and when you’re sick relaxation is important. While I may not be able to relax in bed until I’m well again, burning a scented candle is a great way to help calm my energy and transform my mood.

Rest Well

Like most people, when you’re sick your ultimate goal is to get better as quickly as possible especially when you have others to take care of. Actually… I think as a mom, another goal that is neck and neck with getting better well is to avoid getting anyone in you household sick.

To get over my cold quickly I do my best to eat well throughout the day and I drink lot’s of water. I stay on top of my DayQuil tablets during the day and when it’s time for bed I take NyQuil to get the best sleep ever. Is it me or do your sinuses become clogged as soon as you hit the bed? I feel like I’m suffocating. NyQuil takes care of that and all of my other cold and flu symptoms putting me right to sleep so that I can get a good nights rest to have the energy I need to tackle another day of motherhood.

As moms, we do so much for our families and when we aren’t feeling well, a smoothly run household can spiral out of control fast. It’s okay if you use up a box or two of Puffs. It’s okay if you let the house go and It’s definitely okay if you take it easy for a few days. If you have time to get well you should be back to her old self in no time.

You have really thought of everything for a mommy sick day. Not always the best for the family I have to admit. But I love the tea idea and I can suggest a long hot bath with eucalyptus oil. Works wonders!

It’s horrible when you’re a mom and get sick! Even when kids realize you’re sick, they may not understand just how bad you feel. There really is no rest time. Sounds like you’ve got a good routine down. Wish mine was as smooth as yours! Lol!

I feel like I have reached my maximum sick days for my whole life at this point. A couple of years ago, I was in the hospital for two months straight. I hope to keep everything together for a while now although it can be hard to escape the flu season. I will stock up just in case!

These are essentials for sure!! Moms do not have time for sick days but we really need to give our selves time to get healthy. Tea and sleep are my go to items for sure.

These are definitely essentials in my house, but love the idea of the tea. Going to pick that one up since flu season in full swing! Thanks!

I’m sick right now so this was very timely. Our kids are older now so it isn’t as hard as when they were little and completely dependent on me.

This is a great list! I definitely need my green tea, a box of tissues, homemade chicken soup and essential oils when I’m sick. Thanks!
