How We Start Our Backyard Home Garden

May 31, 2017

Thank you Softsoap® for sponsoring this post.

Our hands put love into everything they touch, whether it’s gardening, crafting, cooking or offering a hand to friends and family. Today we are using our hands to make delicious memories.  We are replanting our fruit and vegetable garden we started last year.  Well I can’t really say “we” because that would include me, and honestly the kids and hubby had everything to do with it so let me correct myself.  Join us as we replant our fruit and vegetable garden that they started last year.

My husband takes gardening very seriously it was interesting to see him love on the plants every day.  His overall excitement as they began to grow was heartwarming. I contemplated changing our kids’ names to “pepper” and “onion” to trick him into being just as attentive. Gardening is truly a labor of love.  It takes a lot of time and you don’t always yield what you expected.  Oh and the garden pests can really have you feeling down but planting a garden is believing in tomorrow and anything you do with your hands gives you a sense of pride.  Read to the very end for a special giveaway to show your hands some much needed love after you garden with us.

TOOLS

Small Garden Rake
Small Garden Shovel
Seeds, we are planting Peas!
Softsoap® Hand Wash Plus Lotion™ Liquid Hand Soap

TIME TO GARDEN

Hubby instructed us to rake the earth to soften it in preparation for our seeds.  While we were raking we removed any large roots, sticks and weeds.

Here’s a up close look of what pea seeds look like. Joel kept asking if he could eat them. In a few months buddy.

Next hubby helped us make lines in the soft dirt with the shovel where we would lay our seeds.

Now we cover our seeds and pat the earth gently.

And while we’re here why not play in the dirt a little?

CLEAN UP

After using our hands to tend the earth and plant our seeds they were very dirty. Softsoap® Hand Wash Plus Lotion™ liquid hand soap can help give your hands back the extra love they deserve.

This unique formula hydrates and softens skin leaving your hands irresistibly soft and smooth.    You can get them in three luxurious fragrances, including Shea & Cocoa Butter, Aloe Water & Lime, and Orchid & Coconut Milk.

READY TO START YOUR HOME GARDEN?

When you grow your own food, you savor it more because of the effort it took to get to the table.  Growing your own food has many health benefits, It helps you eat more fresh fruits and vegetables. You decide what kinds of fertilizers and pesticides come in contact with your food.  If you’re thinking of starting your own backyard garden I suggest you start off really small and only plant foods you know you will eat.  And to restore the love back to your hands I’m giving away a set of Softsoap® Hand Wash Plus Lotion™ liquid hand soap.

What perfect timing with this reading this post. We are hoping to plant our first (very small) garden this year and I need all the help/tips I can get, so thank you! Also, your kids and their cuteness is totally distracting. 😉

Love that you got the kids involved in gardening!
We have already finished cleaning out the front flower bed and we have a lot of plants almost ready to bloom. Now we are working on the bigger tasks. Like making a bridge and planning trees! LOL!!

I wish I had the space and green thumb to garden. Unfortunately, this girl is not good with plants!

This is awesome! I always wanted a garden, but we live in an urban atmosphere. I think I may need to build a garden box!

Love your little helpers! My kids love to garden with me, we do not have a vegetable garden but the flowers in my yard get a lot of love and attention at my house.

What a great start! There are so many benefits to gardening for everyone, specially kids. Dirt is good for us! 🙂 Next maybe have the kids find rocks to put around your garden spot so it is easy to weed and mow around!

We have a deck instead of a garden area and I love that you are doing this. Your kids look like they are having fun, and I remember the anticipation of waiting for things to grow. Enjoy!

Oh, I didn’t know they had one with lotion! I love liquid soap especially when we are doing something super dirty like gardening!

How fun I would love to have a garden for my kids! We’ve used Soft Soap for year but I didn’t realize they had a version with lotion, will have to pick some up on my next shopping trip.

We’re selling our house, but I can’t wait to do this at our next home. My daughter has been begging for a garden!

My kids want to start a garden so badly but I never really knew where to start. This post is so helpful!

That looks like so much fun! We used to do that when the kids were younger and now I have no flower beds left to plant in. Maybe it’s time to redo!

I love that you included your kids in the gardening. It is so important for people to learn these skills

How fun for kids to get dirty in the garden and actually see the fruits of their labor when everything starts growing. My husband is the gardener in our family. My thumb is not very green!

This is so awesome! I wish more families would get into gardening. We had a small one as kids and as soon as I own a home again I will be planting one too!

My so just loves helping out with the garden in our backyard. I have done it ever since he was little. Each year he gets more hands on and more excited once things start to grow and produce!!

My favorite moment was planting strawberries and blueberries in our garden. Now my sons get to pick them every spring and summer!
