When the weather is nice my kids live outside but I often hear from moms that they can’t seem to get their kids to get off the couch and go play outside. When you have the TV, the computer, the tablet and cell phone as options honestly who wants to be outside? Now a days when you ask your kids to go play outside they grumble and whine like it’s a punishment. As a child I got in trouble because I never wanted to stay in the house. Boy have times changed.
Kids follow what you do not what you say
The best way to get your kids outside is to go outside with them. Lead by example. You don’t necessarily have to be down on the ground with them making mud pies, but if that’s your thing by all means do it. I like to take my laptop out in our backyard and I’ll sit at the table and write my blog posts, edit videos and reply to emails. Or I’ll find a shady spot and read a book while they ride their bikes and scooters. When my husband is gardening he’ll have them come out and help him and he also calls them out while he’s doing the trash and recycling. The more you go out with them the more they will enjoy being outdoors and then you can slowly lessen how often you go out with them. Then one day they’ll start asking you if they can go out!
Food and snacks for the win
If there’s one thing I know my kids love to do is eat. So what do I do? I bring the food outside. Even if you have a picky eater, I’m sure there’s at least one dish or some snacks that you know they love beyond reason and would eat for every meal if you let them. Yes, that snack! Make them eat it outside and have them play while you prep everything and for a little while after.
We often have lunch and dinner outside in our back yard during the late spring and summer and sometimes even in the early part of fall when the weather is still nice. You’re going to eat that meal anyway so why not do it outside? Take the pressure off of yourself and don’t position it as a party because it’s not. Grab your Dixie Ultra® Disposable Plates to cut down on your dirty dishes. I’m using the new stronger Dixie Ultra® Disposable Plates because these plates are really strong. They have reinforced rims and can handle even your biggest meals without bending or folding.
When eating outdoors I don’t force my kids to sit formally as we do when eating at the dinner table. So please don’t force them to sit still like perfect little angels. Let them run around and play because that’s the point here. The food is just lure them into having a good time outside. I place their favorite snacks – chips, pretzels, fruits – out on Dixie Ultra® Disposable Plates and let them come and grab it as they please.
After they’ve played for a while, I call hubby and if he’s up to it I’ll ask him light up the grill so we can enjoy our favorite vegan hot dogs with our favorite toppings. The grilling is optional of course. When it’s all said and done my children enjoyed themselves outdoors, we all had lunch and I have no dishes to wash! Life is good.
